HISTORY

Eligio Carbonell Malta
(1867-1899)

Eligio Carbonell Malta was the first son of Néstor Carbonell and was born in Sancti Spíritus on September 9, 1867. He arrived in Tampa with his father in the late 1880s and, at a very young age, became one of the main leaders of the Cuban revolutionary movement in Tampa.
Nestor Leonelo Carbonell (1846-1923)

Upon José Martí’s first visit to Tampa in 1891, Eligio became one of his main collaborators and Marti appointed him a spokesperson for the separatist movement. He was at the side of Martí in all the events organized at El Liceo Cubano and appeared with him in the famous photograph on the staircase of the Martinez Ybor cigar factory.
He returned to Cuba with his father in late 1898 and was finishing a book titled Cuba en Tampa when he fell ill and died on August 5, 1899, at the age of 32.

José Martí found many merits in Eligio, as expressed in a letter to him in January 1892: “Few creatures I know of have a clean heart as yours, and I would not like better fortune than to always have your judgment and your affection by my side.”
